When you visit Liz Nordling at her White Bear Lake, Minnesota, home, be ready to enjoy her “homegrown tomatoes,” her delicate orchids, and her culinary skills. Despite the short growing season, Liz always manages to harvest a bountiful vegetable garden, and throughout the year, the orchids continue to brighten the home that is a welcoming place for family and friends.

Elizabeth (Liz) Martin Nordling went back to college to finish a degree that was interrupted by marriage and three children, she was “too old” for many things, such as the Metropolitan Opera Auditions. She was interested in joining Sigma Alpha Iota and discovered the fraternity had no age limit. Initiated by the lively group of young women of Sigma Sigma Chapter at the University of Minnesota in 1982, she went on to serve as the chapter’s treasurer (because it was a job she could do at night after her children went to bed) and on several committees. After finishing her Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance, she affiliated in 1984 with the Minneapolis-St. Paul Alumnae Chapter, serving as treasurer (twice) and as president. When the 1990 Convention was held in Minneapolis, she served on the Convention Steering Committee. In 1991, she served on the National Bylaws Committee and, in 1992, was appointed Epsilon B Province Officer, a position she held until 2003. In 1997, she was asked to co-chair the Century Drive with Geraldine Barretto-Sims. She and Gerri brought the Century Drive to its successful conclusion, raising over one million dollars for SAI Philanthropies, Inc. In 2003 she was elected the National Vice President – Ritual, and in 2006, National President. Liz has received the Sword of Honor, the Rose of Honor, and the Ring of Excellence.

A member of the Minnesota Chorale, the official chorus of the Minnesota Orchestra for 23 years, she has also served on the group’s Board of Directors. She has appeared as a soloist with St. Paul Opera, the University Opera, Thursday Musical, and the University Chamber Singers. She has sung in madrigal groups (the Elizabethan Syngers) and freelances as a singer in the Twin Cities area. She has also held leadership positions with several other music groups in the area, including Thursday Musical, the Young People’s Symphony Concert Association (YPSCA), a part of the Minnesota Orchestral Association; and on the Chamber Music Minnesota Board. The other love in her life is politics! She has been a member of the League of Women Voters for over 30 years, and has put on dozens of candidates’ forums and has served on the boards of both her local League as well as the LWV of Minnesota. In 1997 and 2000 she was the Debates Coordinator for LWVMN and had the distinction of coordinating the debates that helped elect Jesse Ventura Governor of Minnesota.

Liz’s husband of almost 40 years, Neal, is the president and CEO of Multifeeder Technology Inc. a company that makes equipment for the automated packaging industry. They have three children – Elise, Mark, and Peter – and six beautiful grandchildren – Jared, 10; Nathan, 9; Joshua, 7; Grant, 5; Celia, 21/2; and Kate, 2.
