Composers BureauDoris GazdaBiography Doris Gazda, graduate of the Eastman School of Music and Penn State University, taught for many years as a string specialist in the Montgomery County, Maryland, Public Schools. Most recently, she was a Faculty Associate at Arizona State University where she taught string methods. She has served nationally as Secretary for the American String Teachers Association, President of the National School Orchestra Association, and Member-at-Large for ASTA with NSOA. She played violin professionally with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and as a freelance musician in Washington, DC. She is a member of MENC, ASTA with NSOA, SAI, and ASCAP. A proponent of new music for student musicians, Ms. Gazda composes for young string orchestras. She is author of the newly published Stringtown Tunes, Concert Pieces for Beginning String Orchestra (Carl Fischer), High Tech for Strings, a technique book for middle and high school orchestras (Carl Fischer) and co-author of the string method, Spotlight on Strings (Neil A. Kjos). Her numerous, published string orchestra pieces have become favorites with both students and orchestra directors. Ms. Gazda is the recipient of the Penn State University 2003 Alumni Achievement Award from the School of Arts and Architecture. Nationally known for her experience and expertise in string instruction, she presents workshops and conducts conference and regional student orchestras. She is a frequent presenter at state and national meetings for MENC, ASTA with NSOA and MTNA. While living in Maryland, Ms. Gazda founded and conducted the Frederick County Youth Orchestra and the Potomac Valley Youth Orchestra, and was the conductor of the Frederick Community Orchestra.
