Compositions for String and Full Orchestra

Method Books

  • Spotlight on Strings, Levels 1 and 2, (Neil A. Kjos Music Company) is a method for both group and individualized instruction. It starts students by patterning the hand with all four fingers on all four strings and continues to work on all four strings throughout. Designed originally as material for my own students, it emphasizes fingering patterns, rhythms, intervals, and bowings. Suggestions for teaching improvisation and for learning to read music by way of writing music are found throughout.
  • High Tech for Strings (Carl Fischer) is a unison, technical study book comprised of exercise and melodic material for middle and high school strings. Written in sections that encourage practicing the techniques as needed, it covers intervals, harmonics, shifting, the first five positions, bowings, rhythms, scales, vibrato, ornamentation, and solo performance pieces.
  • Stringtown Tunes: Concert Pieces for Beginning String Orchestras (Carl Fischer) a collection of very easy pieces in unison with piano accompaniment and 3-part harmony for beginners. The first piece is for open strings! CD included.
