Composers BureauLauren BernofskyBiography Lauren Bernofsky (b. 1967, Rochester, MN) began studying the violin at age 7, and she was later introduced to composition while studying at the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts. She holds an undergraduate degree in violin and composition from the Hartt School of Music, a master's degree in composition from the New England Conservatory, and a doctorate in composition from Boston University. Her main composition teachers have been Bert Braud, Robert Carl, and Lukas Foss. Lauren Bernofsky's catalog numbers over fifty works, representing a wide variety of ensembles. She has written two string quartets, five brass quintets and a brass trio, trombone ensemble, solo brass, string, and woodwind pieces, piano music, choral music, songs, as well as larger-scale works for band and orchestra. In addition to writing for professional performers, she has a strong commitment to creating music for young musicians as well, and she finds writing for an exuberant five-year-old pianist equally as rewarding as for a seasoned professional. Besides her piano music for students, she has also written for children's choir (Snow-flakes, The Tiger, and The Lamb, published by Boosey & Hawkes) as well as a band piece (Cloud Nine) and several string orchestra pieces (Medieval Scenes, Regal Procession, and The Cuckoo Clock) currently in print from the FJH Music Company. Other string orchestra pieces for young players are her Red Iguana Rhumba and Larghetto. She is a recipient of two Astral Career Grants from The National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts, two grants from The American Composers Forum, two Jory Copying Assistance Grants from The American Music Center, and travel grants from the American Embassies in Norway and Iceland. Her commissions include such groups as The Del Mar Trio (Corpus Christi, TX), The Holyoke Civic Symphony (Holyoke, MA), The Litchfield County Children's Choir (Watertown, CT), Rivers Music School (Weston, MA), The South Shore Conservatory (Duxbury, MA), and Sinfonia Calcania of Boston. Dr. Bernofsky's composition, Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra, is the subject of a doctoral dissertation by a student at the University of Wisconisin-Madison and was also featured in an article in the journal of the International Trumpet Guild. Her music has been performed across the United States as well as in Canada, Norway, Iceland, Germany, New Zealand, and Australia. Her works are published by Frank E. Warren Music Service, The FJH Music Company, Inc., Micropress (UK), Dorn Publications, and Boosey & Hawkes. Lauren Bernofsky is former faculty of the Peabody Conservatory.
