Born in Emmons, Minnesota 1922. Early years were spent in Southern Minnesota and Northern Iowa. Graduated from Thompson High School, Thompson, Iowa 1939. Attended Drake University, receiving the B. Mus. Ed. degree in 1943. Served three years in the 324th ASF Band, Aberdeen, Maryland 1943-1946. In 1947 received the BM degree in composition from Northwestern University. Received the MM degree in composition in 1948 from Northwestern University. Taught at West Virginia University 1949-1952 and 1954-1960. Attended Eastman School of Music 1952-1954, receiving the DMA in composition and Performer's Certificate in French Horn in 1956. Taught at Northern Illinois University 1960-1992. He has composed music for a wide variety of performers, including instrumental and vocal soloists, chamber music groups, wind ensembles and symphony orchestras. Several works were written for theatre and for modern dance. Many works are published and have been performed by the Minneapolis Symphony, Eastman-Rochester Symphony, Fargo-Moorhead Symphony, Chicago String Ensemble, Illinois Chamber Symphony, and DeKalb Kishwaukee Symphony. In addition to numerous performances in the United States, there have been performances in foreign countries such as Argentina, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, South Africa, Switzerland, and Taiwan.
