The 2008 Salvatore Martirano Memorial Composition AwardPostmark Deadline: February 29, 2008 Open to any composer, regardless of age or nationality. $15 entrance fee; first prize $1,000; second prize $500; performances by the University of Illinois New Music Ensemble in the fall of 2008 at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. Anonymous submission of full scores of any style or aesthetic direction for one to fifteen performers (including vocalists) may be submitted. Works for tape, electronics and/or mixed media with or without instruments/voices are eligible. Duration 20 minutes maximum. The Fifty-fifth Annual Washington International Competition for PianoDeadline: March 20, 2008 This competition, which rotates among voice, strings and composition, and piano, is presented by the Friday Morning Music Club Foundation, which has several SAIs on its board. Ages 18-28 are eligible. Winners receive opportunity for solo recitals and cash prizes ($10,000 First Prize, $4,000 Second; $2,000 Third). This competition has identified several young artists over the years who are now internationally known, including Jessye Norman. Finals will be held in the Kennedy Center May 24-25, 2008. International Alliance for Women in Music (IAWM) 27th Annual Competition for Women ComposersDeadline for receipt of entry: March 14, 2008 Several competitions, each with special requirements, e.g ., minimum age 50; women 21 and under, etc. Cash and performance prizes. Contestants must be IAWM members or must join at the time of entry ($55 individual; $30 student; $30 senior over 65; $80 - Joint; $1000 - Lifetime). You may send your membership check along with your competition submission. A composer may submit only one piece in any given year in only one chosen category. The work submitted must be unpublished by a major publishing house and must have won no prior awards at the time of entry in the competition. Submissions are anonymous. Website click on “Opportunities & Competitions” 2nd Magistralia Competition for Music Creation for WomenPostmark deadline: March 31, 2008 The competition is open to all women composers of all nationalities and ages. Each composer may present a single original and unpublished musical creation 10-15 minutes in length. The orchestral formation will be symphonic without solo instruments or vocals with a maximum number of instruments (listed on website). The compositions will be submitted under a pseudonym, by certified post to the Magistralia Foundation (Centro Comercial “Soto De Llanera, 12 A-B. 33423 Pruvia, Asturias, Spain) addressed to “Magistralia Competition for Musical Creation.” The music score must be submitted in CD, in pdf, Finale or Sibelius format in a sealed envelope. VOICES FOUND Choral Anthem ContestDeadline for receipt: May 1, 2008 The Women’s Sacred Music Project announces an international contest for choral anthem settings of texts and/or tunes by women in VOICES FOUND, a supplement to the Hymnal 1982 of the Episcopal Church. $50 entry fee. A total of $6,000 in prizes (three envisioned) will be awarded; winning compositions will be performed in 2009 at the Princeton University Chapel. Scores must be set in a commonly used note setting program. 2008 Vakhtang Jordania International Conducting CompetitionApplication Deadline: April 1, 2008 The seventh Vakhtang Jordania International Conducting Competition will be held between June 1 and June 7, 2008, at the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga. The competition is open to conductors, regardless of age, sex, or nationality. Entries will be screened by an international panel of judges who will select 24 to compete in the first round of the competition. Decisions will be announced by April 15, 2008.
