Annual Scholarships and Awards

For SAI Members For Members and Non-Members

The Career Performance Grant, in memory of Verna Ross Orndorff

graphic, brochure frontAn annual grant of $5,000 will be awarded to a member of Sigma Alpha Iota for the purpose of advancing her career in performance. The program, open to singers and instrumentalists, will be on a three-year rotation:

  • Strings, Woodwinds and Brass 2008
  • Piano, Harpsichord, Organ and Percussion 2009
  • Voice 2010

Vocalists may be no older than 35, Instrumentalists no older than 32, as of the application deadline date of March 15, 2008.

To be eligible for this award, an applicant must have an undergraduate degree as of application deadline; be preparing for a concert career and demonstrate career potential; must have had considerable performing experience outside the academic environment; and must not be under professional management. Grant funds must be used for advanced study, coaching, or other purposes directly related to the development of a professional performing career.

Each application must be accompanied by a 30-minute CD. The winner will be selected by a professional judging panel from among all the applications postmarked by the deadline date of March 15 each year.

Conducting Scholarship for Graduates, in Memory of Bobbie Burk

A $2,500 scholarship is offered to a member of Sigma Alpha Iota who is enrolled in a graduate degree program with an emphasis in conducting. Applications must include a videotape of a performance conducted by the applicant.

Doctoral Grant

A grant of $2,500 is awarded to a member of Sigma Alpha Iota who is enrolled in a program leading to a doctoral degree. Dissertations are acceptable in Music Education, Music Therapy, Musicology, Ethnomusicology, Theory, Psychology of Music, or Applied Research including Performance or Pedagogy.

International Study Grant for Graduate Students

Sigma Alpha Iota Philanthropies, Inc. announces an annual grant of $3,000 for music studies outside the United States for initiated members of Sigma Alpha Iota pursuing advanced studies beyond the bachelor’s degree. The purpose of the grant is designed to provide a student with the invaluable experience gained through living and studying in a foreign country.

Jazz Studies Scholarship

An applicant for the Jazz Studies Scholarship ($1,500) must be an initiated member of Sigma Alpha Iota in good Financial standing with the Fraternity. The scholarship must be applied toward study leading to a music degree with an emphasis in Jazz Studies.

No 2007-2008 winner.

Music Education for Graduate Students

In memory of Mabel Biever

Sponsored by the Oak Park Alumnae Chapter

A scholarship of $1,500 will be awarded to a member of Sigma Alpha Iota who has completed an undergraduate degree in Music Education and has been accepted into and/or continuing in an accredited graduate program leading to a masters or doctoral degree in music education. The alumnae member must be in good standing with the fraternity and have paid National Dues. It is preferred that the candidate has had at least one year of teaching experience in a private or public school. Applicants without teaching experience must include a video of student teaching experience and references from her major professor and her student teacher advisor.

Music Therapy Scholarship

One $1,000 scholarship is available to a undergraduate or graduate member of Sigma Alpha Iota who has successfully completed a minimum of two years approved training toward a degree in music therapy. She must be continuing her studies in this field. This is awarded on the basis of a written application.

Musicians with Special Needs Scholarship

(formerly under the heading of Visually Impaired Scholarship)

A scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded to a member enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in music with a qualifying disability or to someone pursuing studies to become a teacher or therapist in this field.

Undergraduate Scholarships

Every year each chapter may nominate one member under senior status for a scholarship. There will be 12 scholarships at $1500 and 3 Holt winners at $2000. Criteria are:
(a) exemplification of the ideals of Sigma Alpha Iota;
(b) financial need;
(c) outstanding musical ability;
(d) above-average scholarship;
(e) potential leadership; and
(f) contribution to campus and community life.

Fifteen winners are selected from applications postmarked by the deadline date, March 15.

Elin J. Stene Scholarship at the University of Kansas

One scholarship of $1,500 will be awarded to a student at the University of Kansas (Beta Beta chapter). Applications are submitted to a scholarship committee at the school which will select the winner of the scholarship.
