Triennial Scholarships and Awards

Winners of these scholarships, grants and awards are announced at the triennial SAI Convention. All application postmark deadlines are March 15 of Convention years unless otherwise indicated. Applicants must be members in good financial standing with the Fraternity, and have paid National Dues. There is a non-refundable application fee in each instance.


Graduate Performance Awards

Prizes of $2,000 and $1,500 are offered to members of Sigma Alpha Iota for graduate study in the field of performance. Eight finalists may be chosen from taped auditions in Voice; Keyboard & Percussion; Strings; Winds and Brass. The final competition is held at the National Convention.

2006 Winners

Piano and Percussion (Mary Ann Starring Memorial Award)

  • Second Prize, $1,500 - Elaine Fukunga pianist, currently on a Fulbright graduate research grant in Spain. Focus of her study is the piano works of Joaquin Rodrigo.

Strings (Dorothy E. Morris Memorial Award)

  • First Prize, $2,000 - Sarah Billing, violist

Voice (Lucille Marsh Memorial Award)

  • Second Prize, $1,500 - Rebecca Wascoe

Woodwinds and Brass (Mary Ann Starring Memorial Award)

  • First Prize, $2,000 - Prema Kesselman, flutist, currently performing throughout USA and Europe

Jazz Performance Awards

New for 2006! Prizes of $2000 (winner) and $1500 (runner-up) are offered to college initiated members of SAI enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs in jazz studies or performance. Winners perform at National Convention.

Scholarships for Undergraduate Performance

Four $1,500 scholarships will be offered to undergraduate members of Sigma Alpha Iota for instrumentalists and vocal performance. Applicants must be returning to school in the fall as undergraduates. Scholarships will be awarded based on taped auditions in Voice; Keyboard & Percussion; Strings; Winds and Brass. The winners will perform at a Mini-Musicale at the National Convention.

  • Samantha Barnes, Zeta Tau (Blanche Z. Hoffman Memorial Award for Voice)
  • Angela Collier, Delta Pi (Mary Ann Starring Memorial Award for Woodwinds or Brass), Flute
  • Jessica Robinson, Theta Chi (Dorothy E. Morris Memorial Award for Strings), Violin
  • No recipient for the Mary Ann Starring Memorial Award for Piano
