Annual American Composers Update
Daniel McCarthy
Daniel McCarthy is Associate Professor of Music in Theory
and Composition at Indiana State Univ., in Terre Haute.
In May 1999, he received a special citation on the floor
of the Michigan State Legislature in honor of his achievements
in music composition and contributions to music in the
state of Michigan. He won an Indiana State Univ. Research
Award for accumulative work in composition.

During the 1999 season, works heard first at the Interlochen
(MI) Arts Camp (IAC) included

the Intermediate Concert Orchestra, under Steven Ward,
July 11;
War Hammer, with Shannon Wood, marimba
and CD, July 14;
An American Girl, with the High
School Concert Orchestra, Timothy Russell conducting,
Aug. 14; and
Swords of Power, with percussionists
Keith Aleo and Kimberly Burja, July 10. The Arianna Quartet
and bassoonist Barrick Stees introduced
All the West
was Moving at the Interlochen Arts Academy, Jan. 25,
1999, and then played it at Michigan State Univ., Feb.
13, 1999, and at Eastern Michigan Univ., Mar. 15, 1999.
In 1999, the first performances of
Grand Ledges: Vistas
in Michigan occurred with the Grand Ledge (MI) High
School Band, led by Michael Kaufman, May 26; with the
IAC High School Concert Band, conducted by the composer,
July 4; and with the Grinnell Coll. Wind Ensemble, Mark
Dorr, director, Oct. 3.

for electric violin, with Barbara Sturgis-Everett, July
19;
Tales of the Donner Expedition, with the Faculty
Woodwind Quintet, Aug. 4; and
KraftHammer, with
the High School Symphonic Band, McCarthy conducting, Aug.
14. Alison Shaw led the Michigan State Univ. Percussion
Ensemble in
HammerStrength, Mar. 2, 1999. At a
Merkin Hall program, Shaw, percussion, and Winston Collier,
bassoon, played
Bundles of Sticks, May 24, 1999
in New York, NY. The Grand Ledge High School Symphonic
Band, under Kaufman, presented
