Annual American Composers Update
Howard J. Buss
Howard J. Buss lives in Lakeland, FL, where he serves
as editor of Brixton Publications (ASCAP) and Buss Publications
(BMI). For the 15th consecutive year, he has received
an ASCAP award for significant performances of his music
in non-commercial venues.
Premieres
Where Now Rusts the Iron? premiered Oct. 14, 1999
in Tampa, FL, with soprano Samantha Richmond, flutist
Kim McCormick, cellist Betsy Goode, and the University
of South Florida Percussion Ensemble, Robert McCormick,
conductor. As part of the National Flute Association Convention,
Rebecca Arrensen, piccolo; Robert E. Price, clarinet;
and Paula Peace, piano introduced
Night Flight,
Aug. 20, 1999 in Atlanta. The International Trombone Festival
included the first performance of
Trek!, with Douglas
Wright, trombone, and David Heinick, piano, June 3, 1999
in Potsdam, NY. On Feb. 16, 1999, Constance Lane, flute,
and Branden Lane, percussion, presented
Sky Blossoms,
at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. In 1999,
the Kazakstan National Flute Ensemble, led by Helga Kuster,
played his Schumann transcription
Three Pieces from
the Album for the Young at the National Flute Association
Convention, in Atlanta, Aug. 19; and in Kazakstan, June
3.
Performances
Mitchell Estrin, clarinet; Art Jennings, trombone; and
Donald Showen, percussion, played
Capriccio, Oct.
24, 1999 at the University of Florida, in Gainesville.
Night Tide, for trombone and percussion, had 1999
performances with Eric Dodson at Texas Christian Univ.,
May 12; and with Gordon Cherry and John Rudolph at the
University of British Columbia, in Vancouver, Mar. 3.
In 1999, Barry McGinnis, alto saxophone, and Emma Pettyjohn,
piano, presented
Novella at the North American
Saxophone Alliance conference, held at the University
of Georgia, Feb. 6; and at Piedmont Coll., Mar. 21. The
British Trombone Society Festival at the Guildhall School
of Music, in London, included
Camel Music, with
trombonist Paul Hunt.
Fantasia was heard at the
University of Central Florida, in Orlando, with Nora Lee
Garcia, flute; Keith Koons, clarinet; and Gary Wolf, piano,
Jan. 19, 1999.
