Annual American Composers Update
Jonathan Elkus
SAI National Arts Associate Jonathan Elkus, of Albany,
CA, Director of Bands at the University of California,
Davis, owns Overland Music Distributors (Music Publishers).
In 1998, his concert-band transcription of Charles Ives's
The Alcotts, commissioned by the U.S. Marine Band,
premiered under Lt. Col. Timothy W. Foley, at George Mason
Univ., Nov. 12, followed by a performance, along with
the Finale from Ives's
Second Symphony, at the
Midwestern Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, Dec.
16. In 1999, Elkus's transcription of Ives's
Decoration
Day, was heard at the College Band Directors National
Association, Foley conducting, in Austin, TX, Mar. 23;
and and at George Mason Univ., James B. Sinclair conducting,
May 16. He is editor of the critical edition of Ives's
Second Symphony for the Charles Ives Society; and
co-editor, with Frank P. Byrne, Jr., of
Seven Marches
of John Phillip Sousa for the American Musicological
Society MUSA series.
Performances
In 1999, the San Jose State Univ. Wind Ensemble, Keith
Brion conducting, performed
Serenade, for French
horn, baritone, and band, with Joseph Kelly and Rob Newcomb,
at the the Collegiate Wind Festival, held at California
State Univ., Fresno, Mar. 14; and with Kelly and Robert
Coburn, at San Jose State Univ., Mar. 16.
