Annual American Composers Update
Judith Lang Zaimont
Judith Lang Zaimont* resides in suburban
Minneapolis, MN. Chamber Music America, which
named her Doubles, for oboe and piano, to its
"Century List," has awarded her a Millennium Commission
for a string trio for Ensemble Capriccio to premiere
at the Walker Art Gallery, in Minneapolis. In 1999,
her essay, "Being a Composer -- Ruminations on an Undescribable
Art," appeared in the American Composers Forum journal,
Sounding Board (July), and a radio interview
was recorded in San Francisco (May) to be published
in Mississippi Rag.
Premieres
Elegy, for symphonic strings,
has its world premiere in Mar. 1999 with the New York
Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra, under the baton of Raffael
Adler, and was heard in June 1999 in Moscow, Russia
with the Kremlin Chamber Orchestra under Misha Rachlevsky.
Parallel Play (Fanfare, Folksong, and Folderol),
commissioned by the University of Wisconsin - River
Falls, was heard first there in Apr. 1999, followed
by its European premiere at the Fiuggi (Italy) Donne
in Sax festival, Sept. 1999, and at a Merkin Hall, New
York, NY performance in Feb. 2000. Conducted by Nick
Strimple, La Vie Ensemble gave the first West Coast
performance of Meditations at the Time of the New
Year, for choir and two percussion, in May 1999.
