Annual American Composers Update
Larry Bell
SAI National Arts Associate Larry Bell
lives in Boston, where he holds the position of Professor
of Composition at the Boston Conservatory and chairs
the theory department at the New England Conservatory
Continuing Education and Preparatory Divisions. In Aug.
1999, he had a residency at the Virginia Center for
the Creative Arts, in Sweet Briar. A brochure of his

Premieres
Fred Cohen directed The Currents Ensemble
in the first performance of Two Haiku, Mar. 19,
1999 in Richmond, VA. At St. Steven's Church, New York,
NY, the North South Consonance presented the clarinet
version of Mahler in Blue Light, May 23, 1999.
In 1999, The Immortal Beloved, a song cycle based
on Beethoven's letters, premiered with mezzo-soprano
Judy May and the composer at the piano, at the New England
Conservatory, Nov. 11; and at the Community College
of Rhode Island, in Warwick, Nov. 12.
Performances
The Book of Moonlight had 1999
performances with Ayano Ninomiya, violin, and Bell,
piano, over Boston's WGBH Radio, Mar. 30; and with the
Just In Time Composers and Players, at the Boston Conservatory,
Oct. 1. In 1999, the Just In Time Composers and Players
also played Mahler in Blue Light, at the Cambridge
(MA) Center for Adult Education, Apr. 23; and excerpts
from Reminiscences and Reflections, 12 preludes
and fugues for piano, at Middlesex Community Coll.,
Bedford, MA, Oct. 29.. At the Boston Conservatory, the
TBC Contemporary Ensemble, under Bell, presented Two
Haiku, May 2, 1999.
