Annual American Composers Update

Michael Mauldin

Michael Mauldin lives and works in Albuquerque, NM, where he teaches piano and composition and directs the Albuquerque Boy Choir.

Premieres

On Feb. 15, 1999, organist W. Michael Brittenback gave the first performance of Kokopelli, His Flutesong, commissioned by the Saint Margaret's Episcopal Church in Palm Desert, CA for the dedication of its new Quimby pipe organ. Three Songs for Sax and Piano, commissioned by the University of New Mexico, was premiered by Carrie Koffman, saxophone, and Lawrence Blind, piano, Mar. 30, 1999 at the university as part of the John Donald Robb Composers Symposium.

Performances

Conducted by the composer, the Albuquerque Boy Choir performed Come, Holy Spirit at the Music Teachers National Association national convention, Mar. 21, 1999 in Los Angeles. The New Mexico Woodwind Quintet played Canyon Light: Four Scenes for Woodwind Quintet, Apr. 15, 1999 at Robertson Recital Hall, in Albuquerque. The Sangre de Cristo Chorale sang Introduction of the Child to the Cosmos, June 26, 1999 at St. Francis Auditorium in Santa Fe. At the Festival Internacional de Musica y Danza de Granada, Elisa Mediero presented Birds in Winter: Six Preludes for Harp, June 28, 1999. In 1999, the Symphony Orchestra of Albuquerque included Dawn at San Juan Mesa on its July 1, 24, and 25 concerts.

Come, Holy Spirit (based on the plainsong chant Veni Spritus Sanctus), SATB choir and piano; Neil A. Kjos Music Co. Mountain Winds: Episodes for Flute, Oboe (or Violin) and Harp, Vanderbilt Music Co.
