Annual American Composers Update
Philip Hagemann
Philip Hagemann, a New York, NY resident, conducts the
Rockland (NY) County Choral Society and serves on the
board of directors of Opera Index, a New York City organization
that sponsors an annual singers competition awarding about
$30,000 in prizes. His one-act chamber opera
Paris
and Oenone was the co-winner of the National Opera
Association's 1998 competition. In 1998 performances of
his adaptations included Cesar Franck's
The Virgin
at the Manger for SA choir and piano, with the Rockland
County Choral Society, conducted by the composer, in Haverstraw,
NY, Dec. 6; and Claude Debussy's
The Prodigal Son,
as a one-act chamber opera, with the Cedar Rapids (IA)
Opera Theatre, under Daniel Kleinknecht, Nov. 12-14.
Warner
Brothers Publications has released his arrangement
of Cole Porter's
Don't Fence Me In for TTBB choir
with piano.
Premieres
On Jan. 10, 1999,
Paris and Oenone had its first
performance, conducted by Glen Cortese, at the Manhattan
School of Music, in New York, NY.
In the Shelter of
the Rainbow, for SATB choir and piano, was commissioned
and premiered by the Capital Pride Singers, led by Gayle
Hinsdill, in Albany, NY, June 5, 1999. On Dec. 13, 1999,
the Bloomington (IN) Pops Orchestra, under Robert Stoll,
presented the SATB/orchestra version of
Have a Very
Merry Christmas, commissioned by the orchestra.
Performances
The Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre, Kleinknecht conducting,
produced Hagemann's one-act opera
The Music Cure,
May 7-9, 1998. David Morales led the Orinda (CA) Women's
Chorale in
Ave Regina Caelorum, for SSA a cappella
choir, Dec. 6 and 9, 1998. On a Rockland County Choral
Society program,
You Shall Have a Song, for SATB
choir with flute and piano, was heard, conducted by Hagemann,
Jan. 24, 1999.
