Annual American Composers Update
Ray Songayllo
From his home base of Indianola, IA,
Ray Songayllo works independently in the Des Moines
area as a pianist, composer, adjudicator, and sometime
music critic. He presented solo piano recitals in Des
Moines, IA at St. Johns Lutheran, Nov. 25, 1998 and
Nov. 10, 1999, and at Unity Church, Apr. 11. Also in
Des Moines, he presented a two-piano program with Robert
Liene, Sept. 12 at Drake Univ. He played chamber music
at the Colorado State Univ. Pingree Park Campus, May
27-June 4, and at the Dartington International Summer
School and Festival in Devon, UK (Aug.).
Premieres
An Iowa Composers' Concert held Apr.
18, 1999 at Coe Coll., in Cedar Rapids, IA, included
the premiere of Cycle, with Barbara Owen, cello,
and Songayllo, piano.
Performances
On a College Music Society Great Plains
Chapter composers' recital, Songayllo played Nine
Etudes, for piano, Mar. 19, 1999. Douglas Diamond
conducted the Grinnell (IA) Coll. Orchestra in Variations
on a Folk Song, Oct. 1, 1999 at the Mid-America
Composers' Festival, at Grinnell.
