Annual American Composers Update
William Doppmann
William Doppmann makes his home in Ann Arbor, MI. In 1998,
Albany Recordings
released his performance of the James Yannatos Piano Concerto
(1997) with the Harvard/Radcliffe Orchestra, Yannatos
conducting. In Nov. 1999, Equilibrium produced a recording,
Four American Piano Sonatas, with Doppman at the
piano.
Premieres
Doppmann toured with the premiere of
Toccata In Nomine
(1997), for piano, at Grand Valley State Univ., Allendale
MI; the Centrum Foundation, Port Townsend, WA; Oregon
State Univ., Corvallis; and Eastern Washington State Univ.,
Cheney, all in Oct. 1999, to be followed by performances
at Southwest Texas State Univ., San Marcos; and Abilene
(TX) Christian Univ., both in Feb. 2000. In Nov. 1999,
the Marilyn Shotola Trio introduced
Passacaille
(1996), a song cycle for alto flute/piccolo, harp, and
mezzo-soprano (text based on French poems by Samuel Beckett),
at Portland (OR) State Univ. and at Oregon State Univ.,
in Eugene. In 2000, Doppmann presented
Fantasy I: Winter
Dreams (1995) at the Michigan Keyboard Convention
in Ypsilanti (Jan.), with repeat performances scheduled
for Feb. at West Texas Univ., in Amarillo; the University
of Texas, Austin; and Heidelberg Coll, in Tiffin, OH.
Fantasy II: Thaw: Shards to the Sea (1997), for
piano, was played first by Beverly Backam Smoker at Nazareth
Coll., Rochester, NY, Nov. 1999.
Performances
In Feb. 2000, as part of a Composer Residency at the University
of Texas, Austin,
Spring Songs (1981), a song cycle
for mezzo-soprano, clarinet, piano, and percussion, will
receive a performance.
