Annual American Composers Update
Walter S. Hartley
Walter S. Hartley, of Fredonia, NY, Professor Emeritus
at the SUNY College at Fredonia School of Music, has received
his 38th annual ASCAP Standard Award. He has participated
in local, regional, and national Sacred Harp singings.
Premieres
On Oct. 23, 1998, R. Myers led the University of Buffalo
Trombone Choir in the premiere of
Memorial Music
(1998). The Fredonia Concert Band with Wind Symphony soloists,
conducted by Sarah McKoin, introduced
Birds in Space,
for clainet quartet and band, Nov. 11, 1998.
Variants
of a Southern Song (1998), for soprano, alto, and
tenor saxophones, was heard first at the National Conservatory,
in Yerevan, Armenia, Nov. 10, 1998. The Mars Hill (NC)
Coll. Wind Ensemble presented
Angel Band Suite
(1999), Mar. 29, 1999. On July 30, 1999,
Trio Concerto
for Saxophones (1999) had its first performance, with
the Lexington (KY) Trio and pianist Krista Wallace-Boaz.

Florida State Univ. Wind Symphony, led by Bentley Shellahamer,
Nov. 18; and

Chen, piano, Nov. 19. The Syracuse Univ. Saxophone Ensemble,
conducted by Ronald Caravan, played

(1997), Apr. 8 and 18, 1998. Donovan Cox soloed with the
University of Southern Mississippi Symphonic Winds, Gary
Adam, conductor, in
Concerto No. 1 for Alto Saxophone
and Band (1966), Apr. 29, 1999. At SUNY College at
Fredonia, July 2, 1999, Bruce Weinberger directed the
Rascher Quartet Workshop Ensemble in
Sinfonia No. 6
for Saxophones (1985).
