Augusta Read Thomas
Augusta Read Thomas* spends her time in Rochester, NY;
Cambridge, MA; Chicago, IL; Aspen, CO; and Becket, MA.
Commissioned by the Shedd Aquarium for the Seahorse Symphony
exhibit, her
Serenade, for chamber orchestra, was
recorded on CD by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and is
scheduled to play as a tape loop in the seahorse exhibit
for three years. Other recent commissions include
Oboe
Quintet for oboe and string quartet, from Alex Klein
and the Vermeer String Quartet; a work for orchestra and
choir, from the Cleveland Orchestra for a 2001 premiere;
a composition for soprano and strings, from the International
String Soloists for a 2001 premiere; and a work for children's
choir and orchestra, from Soli Deo Gloria for a 2002 premiere.
Pieces recorded for CD releases include
Love Songs
and
The Rub of Love, by Chanticleer for
Teldec;
Angel Chant for piano trio, by the Kapell Trio
for
Gasparo, and
by the Loins Gate Trio for CENTAR;
Fire Song, for
soprano saxophone and sympathetically vibrating instruments,
by Jamal Rossi for Open Loop; and
Passion Prayers,
by Scott Kluksdahl, solo cello, and Philadelphia's Network
for New Music.
Premieres
On June 10, 2000,
Aurora: Concerto for Piano and Orchestra,
commissioned by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, was
premiered by the orchestra with Daniel Barenboim as pianist
and conductor.
