Annual American Composers Update
Donald Grantham
Donald Grantham's
Southern Harmony, for wind ensemble,
won both the National Band Association/William D. Revelli
Prize and the American Bandmasters Association/Ostwald
Award, the second consecutive year that one of Grantham's
works won both awards. Currently, he is working on wind
ensemble commissions for the U.S. Army Field Band and
the West Point Band. He also is working on a piece for
chorus and orchestra based on Homer's
Hymn to the Earth,
commissioned by the New Texas Festival for a Mar. 2001
premiere. Grantham was composer in residence at the University
of Florida, in Gainesville, and Louisiana University in
2000.
Premieres
Under the baton of Trevor Kirk, the Knoxville (TN) Symphony
gave the first performance of
Exhilaration and Cry,
Feb. 17, 2000.
Kentucky Harmony, for wind ensemble,
premiered with the Austin Texas Honor Band, Mar. 31, 2000,
conducted by Paula Crider. In Buenos Aires, at the International
Double Reed Convention,
Wild Basin Music, for woodwind
quintet, was heard first with the Wild Basin Winds, Aug.
11, 2000.
Performances
J'ai ete au bal (I went to the dance) was played
by the Dallas (TX) Wind Symphony, Jerry Junkin, conductor,
Apr. 4, 2000; and at the Musashino Academia Musicae, Russell
Coleman, conductor, in Tokyo, Dec. 17, 1999. James Keene
led the U.S. Army Band in
Southern Harmony, for
wind ensemble, in Austin, TX at the American Bandmasters
Association Convention, Mar. 4, 2000. On Feb. 8, 2000,
Fantasy on Mr. Hyde's Song was performed by the
North Texas University Wind Ensemble, under Dennis Fischer,
in Denton.
From the Diaries of Adam and Eve, for
soprano, baritone, and chamber ensemble, was heard with
Suzanne Ramo, David Small, and the Austin Chamber Soloists,
Oct. 1, 1999. The Soli Chamber Ensemble performed
Quintet:
"Sacred Harp", Sept. 16, 1999 in San Antonio, TX.
