Annual American Composers Update
David W. Maves
With grants from the College of Charleston (SC) and the
South Carolina Arts Commission, David W. Maves has begun
a project to place about 15 of his works, mostly
Gebrauchsmusik,
including
The Owl and the Nightingale for children's
choir, as well as several works for organ solo, for organ
and with instruments or voice, and others for piano, guitar,
voice and piano, voice and guitar, flute and guitar, piano
duet, etc., on-line as freeware, available as Adobe PDF
downloads to any letter-sized printer. The project is
scheduled for completion by summer 2001. His article,
"Die Büreschaft at Spoleto" appeared in the
Kurt
Weill Newsletter Fall 1999 issue, Vol. 17, pp. 7-9.
Premieres
On Jan. 14, 2000,
No, Nonet, for piano, strings,
and winds, was premiered by the North/South Consonance
Ensemble at Christ and St. Stevens Church in New York,
NY.
Performances
Piano Sonata No. 4 was heard in 2000 with Ciro
Foderé at the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston,
SC, May 27; and with Max Lifchitz at Festival Internacional
de Musica Contemporanea, in El Salvador, Oct. 25, and
at Donnell Auditorium, in New York, NY, Feb.12. Organist
William D. Gudger played
Procession With Vistas
at the Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul in Washington,
DC, Nov. 14, 2000. At the College of Charleston, Feb.
28, 2000,
Four Greek Songs, for soprano and piano,
had a performance with Deanna McBroom and Robin Zemp.
