Annual American Composers Update

Greg A. Steinke

Greg A. Steinke serves as Chair of the Art and Music Departments, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies, and Joseph Naumes Professor of Music at Marylhurst (OR) University. In Apr. 2000, he spoke at the SCI Region 6 Conference, held at Sam Houston State University, in Huntsville, TX. He hosted the SCI Region 8 Conference, held at Marylhurst University, where he heard a performance (see below) and played English horn in Byron Yasui's Song of the Heart, Oct. 2000. Recent broadcasts include Santa Fe Trail Echoes, for viola, and Another New Beginning II, for guitar, both on WOMR-FM, Provincetown, MA (Oct.); and Native American Notes, for string quartet, and Another New Beginning II, both on KUOI-FM, Moscow, ID (Jan.). Memories II, for contrabassoon and piano, won Argentina's "The Bass Nightingale" Composers Competition prize, which includes a performance of the work. He has received a 2000-01 ASCAP Standard Award. Last year, he completed Beijing Impressions (Image Music XVI), for large chamber ensemble (also a version for chamber orchestra), and Expressions on the Paintings of Edvard Munch (Image Music XVII), for string quartet. He also wrote an article on D. Antoinette Handy for an encyclopedia of 20th-century women musicians to be published by Oryx Press in 2000.

Premieres

The premiere of Memories II-B of Chief Joseph, for alto saxophone and piano, with Joseph Wytko and John Haek, took place in Mar. 2000 at Marylhurst University. In July 2000, the Ernest Bloch Music Festival, in Newport, OR, introduced Moments from White Blowing Daffodil Seeds, for piano trio.

Performances

Row Twelve performed Northwest Sketches II, for flute, oboe and piano, in Stowe, MA, in Mar. 2000. Also in Mar. 2000, saxophonist Joseph Wytko played Episodes at Marylhurst University and at Willamette University. Memories II of Chief Joseph, for bassoon and piano, was on the schedule of the SCI Region 6 Conference, Mar. 2000. In June, the Marylhurst Concert Chorale sang Singing Heart, an Apache Morning Song. The SCI Region 8 Conference included Three Early Songs, for soprano and harp, with Debra Wilkie and Elaine Seeley.
