Annual American Composers Update
Howard J. Buss
Howard J. Buss's more than 75 published works include
instrumental and vocal solos, symphonic, choral, and band
compositions, and chamber music, performed by faculty
artists at major universities as well as by players from
organizations such as the New York Philharmonic, Israel
Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, Minnesota
Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic, the Toronto Symphony,
and the U.S. Air Force Band. His commissioned works include
numerous original compositions as well as arrangements.
During 2000, Buss was awarded a $5,000.00 Individual Artist
Fellowship from the Florida Department of State. He also
received an ASCAP Award for significant performances of
his music in noncommercial media. Buss is founder and
editor of
Brixton
Publications (ASCAP) and Buss Publications (BMI) which
publish accessible contemporary American music in the
tradition of Gershwin, Copland, and Bernstein. To request

Premieres
The World Within premiered with clarinetist Keith
Koons and cellist Melissa Kraut at the University of Central
Florida, in Orlando on Feb. 6, 2000.
Millennium Visions
for clarinet and string quartet was presented on July
14, 2000 by clarinetist Tom Martin of the Boston Symphony
Orchestra, violinists Felicia Moye and Sophia Silivos,
violist Larry Neuman, and cellist Greg Sauer at the International
Clarinet Association's Clarinetfest 2000 hosted by the
University of Oklahoma in Norman.
Performances
On July 22, 1999 at the Cincinnati Conservatory,
A
Day in the City was performed by trombonist Michael
Davidson.
Impromptu, for soprano saxophone and
marimba, was played by Valerie Gillespie and Robert McCormick
on Oct. 11, 1999 at the University of South Florida in
Tampa. In Spain in 2000, Joan Gadea narrated
Modern
Times, with flutist Joseph Mira and percussionists
Sisco Aparisi, Jordi Francés, Joan Ponsada and
Xavier Valdes, conducted by Angel Lluis Ferrando at Circulo
Industrial, in Alcoy, Jan. 23; and at the La Alianza Musical
Society Auditorium, in Mutxamel, May 21. 2000 performances
of
Boom Time, for trombone and percussion, were
given by Mark Britt and John S. Beckford at Furman University,
Mar. 2; and by Tony Mazzocchi and Edward Nagel at the
Kinhaven (VT) Music Festival, July 22. A University of
Arkansas - Monticello program featured
Night Tide,
for trombone and marimba, with Michael Davidson and Scott
Koskoski, Feb. 22, 2000.
