Annual American Composers Update
Harold Schiffman
Harold Schiffman, Professor Emeritus of Composition at
the Florida State University School of Music, continues
to reside in Tallahassee, FL (winter and spring) and Robbinsville,
NC (summer and fall). He presently serves on the School
of Music Advisory Board of the University of North Carolina,
Greensboro.
Premieres
In 2000 at FOCUS 2000 on piano literature, held at the
University of North Carolina at Greensboro,
Extravaganza
(1998), for three pianos, twelve hands (three piano duets
that can be played separately or simulaneously), was heard
first, beginning with
First Duet, with Arthur Tollefson
and Paul Stewart, June 8; followed by
Second Duet,
with Joseph Di Piazza and George Kiorpes, and
Third
Duet, with Andrew Willis and John Salmon, both June
9; and ending with the entire work with all six performers,
June 10.
Sonata Concertante (l999), for cello and
piano, was introduced by Erica Parker and Christy Wisutheriwong
at the Southeastern Composers League Forum at the University
of North Carolina at Greensboro, Apr. 11, 2000.
Performances
In 1999, pianist Deborah Yardley Beers performed
Spectrum,
My Ladye Jane's Booke (1992), and
Fugues and Postludes
7 and 8 at First Parish Church, in Lexington, MA,
Feb. 28; and at the Longy School of Music, in Cambridge,
