Annual American Composers Update
Leonardo Balada
In addition to being University Professor of Composition
at Carnegie Mellon University, in Pittsburgh, Leonardo
Balada was on the composition faculty in Aug. 2000 at
the Torroella de Montegri International Music Festival,
in Spain.
Premieres
Folk Dreams was premiered by National Orchestra
of Ireland, May 14, 1999 in Dublin, Colman Pearce conducting.
Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 3, was heard
first with Rosa Torres-Pardo and the Berlin Radio Symphony
Orchestra, Feb. 12, 2000, Rafael Frühbech de Burgos
conducting. An obligatory work for the Cadaques (Spain)
International Conductor's Competition,
Passacaglia
was presented by the Cadaques Orchestra, July 28, 2000
at the competition finals, conducted by the two finalists,
Christoph Mueller and Charles Olivieri-Munroe.

Sinfonia en Negro-Homage
to Martin Luther King (

on television in Europe and Latin America.
Concierto
Magico (Beteca Music), for guitar and orchestra, was
played by the National Orchestra of Ireland, Feb. 8, 2000
in Dublin, under Pearce.
Homages to Casals and Sarasate

was presented by the Dusseldorf Symphony Orchestra, Salvador
Mas, conductor, May 10-12 1999; and
Homage to Sarasate
by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Jesus López-Cobos
conducting, Oct. 5-7, 2000. Under the baton of Paul Decker,
A. J. Garcia and the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra performed
Violin Concerto No. 1 (

Schirmer), Oct. 8-10, 1999.
Ponce de Leon (
