Annual American Composers Update

Libby Larsen

SAI Honorary Member Libby Larsen** received an Academy Award in Music from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. A Washington Post review, June 23, 2000, of her song cycle My Antonia called her "imaginative and lyrical." And the Summer 2000 ACDA Newsletter, in a review of a Missa Gaia recording, wrote "Ms. Larsen's treatment of word and music is clearly of a caliber which sets a high standard for other contemporary composers."

Premieres

Christopher Seamans conducted Pamela Frank and the Rochester Philharmonic in the first performance of Still Life with Violin, July 26, 2000 at the Bravo! Vail (CO) Valley Music Festival. The Ravinia Festival included the premiere of Love After 1950, with mezzo-soprano Susanne Mentzer and pianist Craig Rutchberg, Aug. 7, 2000 in Chicago, IL. On Oct. 25, 2000 in Boston, MA, pianist Virginia Eskin presented Mephisto Rag. My Antonia was sung first by Jane Dressler, soprano, accompanied by Linda Jones, piano, June 19, 2000 in Brownville, NE.

Performances

Under the baton of Marin Alsop, the Colorado Symphony played Solo Symphony (Symphony No. 5), July 3, 2000. The King's Singers, conducted by Philip Brunelle, sang Billy the Kid, Apr. 7, 2000 in Minneapolis, MN.
