Annual American Composers Update
Samuel Adler
SAI National Arts Associate Samuel Adler has been commissioned
by the Houston Symphony Orchestra to write a French horn
concerto. In Mar. 2001, he will teach a seminar at Alcala
University in Spain. He was commissioned by the Wolf Trap
Foundation to write a work for the Ying String Quartet,
and has finished a piano quintet for the American String
Quartet. The Third Edition of Adler's book
The Study
of Orchestration will be published in Mar. 2001 by
W.W. Norton Co. Besides the book, workbook, and the set
of five CD's, the new edition will have a CD ROM.
Premieres
Max und Moritz, for narrator and orchestra was
presented June 4, 2000, by the Bochum (Germany) Philhamonic
Orchestra, Carl Topilow, conductor. Led by James Jordan,
Gloria Dei Cantores premiered
Transfiguration,
an ecumenical mass for soloists, choir, brass quintet,
and organ, premiered in Orleans, MA, June 17, 2000.
Concerto
for Viola and Orchestra was heard first Oct. 6-7,
2000 with Randolph Kelly and The Pittsburgh (PA) Symphony
Orchestra, Marek Janowski conducting.
Be not Afraid,
The Isle is Full of Noises will receive its first
performance from the American Brass Quintet, Mar. 10,
2001 in New York, NY.
Performances
In Mannheim, Germany,
The Vision of Isaiah, for
baritone solo, choir, and orchestra was heard, May 14,
2000, with Thomas Berau, the Bach Choir and the Mannheim
Chamber Orchestra, Johannes Michel, conductor. In 2000,
Trio Arbos performed
Trio No. 2, for violin, cello,
and piano, in Madrid, Spain, May 24, and in Buenos Aires,
Argentina, May 30. The Piccolo Spoleto 2000 Festival,
in Charleston, SC, featured
Lux Perpetua, for organ
and orchestra, with S. Wayne Foster and the Charleston
Symphony Orchestra conducted by the composer, June 9,
2000. Under the baton of Christoph von Dohnanyi, Stephen
Geber and The Cleveland (OH) Orchestra played Adler's
Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, Apr. 6-8 2000.
2000 performances of
Ports of Call, for two violins
and guitar, occurred at Cleveland Institute of Music,
with Jackie Saed, Sarah McFarland, and Ross Mann Apr.
7, 2000; and at the Eastman School of Music, in Rochester,
NY, with Elia Kahler, Tim Ying, and Nicholas Goluses,
Sept. 9, 2000.
