Annual American Composers Update

Alice Jordan

"It was my good fortune to be the recipient of a choral/organ commission from Thomas Swan and to have had the privilege of being in Buffalo, NY for the premiere, which he conducted in inspiring style. The text, Psalm 34, v. 1-8, was his selection and a favorite. Unfortunately, just a few months later, he died of cancer at the age of 58."

Premieres

Alice Jordan's Let us Exalt his Name (text from Psalm 34, v. 1-8), commissioned by the Bowman/Swan Music Fund, was heard first with the Westminster Presbyterian Church Adult Choir, directed by Swan with organist Robert M. Speed, October 29, 2000, in Buffalo. On June 2, 2001, at Kopaa Hawaiian United Church of Christ (UCC) Church, in Waimea, HI, a massed choir of 11 area UCC churches, with director Lois Recciardi and organist Nancy Sato, presented Psalm of Praise, commissioned in honor of James and Ruth Cassel, choir director and organist of the Waimea UCC. Choirs of three Lutheran churches in Des Moines, IA, with John Kelly, director, and Robert Lien, organ, gave the first performance of Laudation on "Den Store Hvide Flok" (a Norwegian melody based on Who is this host . . . .), commissioned by George and Mary Ann Olsen for the 125th Anniversary Celebration of Central Lutheran Church, on Reformation Sunday, October 28, 2001.

Performances

In 2001, Earline Moulder's organ recitals in Sydney, Australia included Reflection on Forest Green, at the Parish of St. James, March 14, and at St. Andrews Cathedral, March 16. Luther at Zion Lutheran Church, in Anoka, MN, April 13; with Catherina Bristol and David Bowman at an Alabama State University faculty recital, in Montgomery, September 19; and with John Corina and Dell Hitchcock at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, in Athens, GA, March 14. Accompanied by pianist Brenda Arnold Day, mezzo-soprano Susan McAdoo sang Take Joy Home at Westminster Choir College, in Princeton, NJ, May 12, 2001.
