Annual American Composers Update
Alex Shapiro
Alex Shapiro was awarded a 2001 prize from The International
Society of Bassists for her work for bass viol and piano
entitled Of Bow and Touch (Activist Music). She

Premieres
In October 2001, Of Bow and Touch was premiered
by Tom Peters at California State University Long Beach.
Trio for Clarinet, Violin and Piano (Activist
Music) had its first New York performance with Richard
Goldsmith, Deborah Buck, and Max Lifchitz, May 2001.
Introspect (Activist Music), for string quartet,
was played first by Daphne Chen, Melissa Reiner, Alma
Fernandez, and Adam Esbensen; in Los Angeles, CA, January
2001.
Performances
In 2001, Music for Two Big Instruments, for
tuba and piano, had performances with Norman Pearson
and Cynthia Bauhof-Williams at the College Music Society
(CMS) Pacific Southern Chapter meeting, held at the
University of California San Bernadino (April); with
Velvet Brown and Robert Satterlee, as part of Bowling
Green (OH) State University's New Music and Art Festival,
held at the Toledo Museum of Art (October); and with
Joe Skillen and Laurelie Gheesling at the CMS meeting
in Santa Fe, NM (November). Shiny Kiss was presented
by flutist Jamie Pedrini at Pasadena (CA) City College
in April 2001. Transplant, for organ, was heard
with Carson Cooman in Toronto, Canada in April 2001.
