Annual American Composers Update
Brian Fennelly
Brian Fennelly has had recent commissions from the
Koussevitzky Foundation, for Arias and Interludes
(String Quartet No. 2), written in 2001 for the Pro
Arte Quartet; from Parthenia, a consort of viols; and
from trombonist Joseph Alessi of the New York Philharmonic.
"I will be resident composer at the Camargo Foundation
center in Cassis, France, for the winter-spring semester,
2002. I am professor emeritus at New York University
and remain co-director of the Washington Square Contemporary
Music Society, now in its 25th season in New York City
and recently acclaimed by Fanfare Magazine as
'among the world's most outstanding new music ensembles.'"

Performances
The New York Virtuoso Singers, Harold Rosenbaum, conductor,
performed Keats on Love at St. Peter's Church,
at the Citicorp Center in New York, NY, on October 20,
2001. In 2001, Three's Company, for flute, saxophone,
and piano, was heard on a Sounds New concert in Kensington,
CA, March 4; at the Society of Composers National Conference,
held at the University of Syracuse (NY), March 30; and
on Live from Studio 1 on WFMT-FM, Chicago, with
saxophonist David Pituch, for whom the piece was written,
and assisting artists, November 5. Pituch also played
Tesserae VIII, for solo saxophone, in 2001, at
the Flat File Gallery, in Chicago, September 6; and
on at the College of Lake County, north of Chicago,
September 8. Sonata Serena was performed by pianist
Margaret Mills in New York, NY, in 2001, at Christ and
St. Stephen's Church, March 19 and May 15, and at Merkin
Hall, October 15.
