Annual American Composers Update
Harold Schiffman
Harold Schiffman is Professor Emeritus of Composition
at the Florida State University School of Music. He
continues to reside in Tallahassee, FL, (winter and
spring) and Robbinsville, NC, (summer and fall). He
presently serves on the School of Music Advisory Board
of the University of North Carolina, Greensboro.
Premieres
Under the baton of Max Lifchitz, pianist Jane Perry-Camp
and The North/South Chamber Orchestra premiered Chamber
Concerto No. 2: In Memoriam Edward Kilenyi (2000),
on The North/South Consonance Concert Series at Christ
and St. Stephen's Church, New York, NY, February 18,
2001. Snowbird Suite (1995), based on music by
bluegrass artists Bill and Wilma Millsaps, had its first
performance with The Huxford Symphony Orchestra of the
University of Alabama, Carlton McCreery, music director
and conductor, at the Southeastern Composers' League
Fiftieth Anniversary Celebration and Conference, held
at the University of Alabama, in Tuscaloosa, April 5,
2001.
Performances
Also performed at the Southeastern Composers' League
conference was Sonata for Flute and Piano (1975),
with Sheryl Cohen and Perry-Camp, April 6, 2001. Will
Peebles and Lillian Pearson played Sonata for Bassoon
and Piano (1976) October 25, 2000, at the Western
Carolina Department of Music, in Cullowhee, NC. The
Festival of New Music at The Florida State University
School of Music, in Tallahassee, February 2, 2001, included
Sonata Concertante for Violoncello and Piano
(1999), with Evgeni Raytchev and Tad Hardin. On March
1, 2001, Megan E. Connelly presented selections from
Nine Pieces for Piano (1975) at Duquesne University,
in Pittsburgh, PA.
