Annual American Composers Update

Premieres
The three-act lyric opera The Biddle Boys and
Mrs. Soffel (libretto by the composer), had its
first production at the Tuesday Musical Club, Opera
Division, in Pittsburgh, PA, June 15-17, 2001. Under
the baton of Scott Yoo, the Metamorphosen Chamber Orchestra
introduced Sinfonietta (2000), for string orchestra,
September 28, 2001, in Troy, NY. String Quartet No.
4 (1999-2000) was premiered by the San Gabriel Quartet,
March 2, 2001, at California State University, Fullerton.
Performances
Sparks, and Flame (Ash) (1997) had performances
in 2001 with the Albuquerque (NM) Philharmonic, under
Joel Gelpe (April-May); and with the Portland (ME) Symphony
Orchestra, Toshiyuki Shimada, conductor (January). Black
Water (text by Beck based on the novel by Joyce
Carol Oates), for soprano and piano, was heard in 2001
at California State University, Fullerton, with Jean
McDonald and Robin Guy, March 2; and at the University
of North Carolina, in Chapel Hill, with Terry Rhodes
and Jane Hawkins (January). On May 10, 2000, the Showcasing
American Composers series at Cooper Union, in New York,
NY, included the New York City Opera in a rehearsed
presentation, with orchestra, of excerpts from The
Highway (libretto by the composer), an opera in
four scenes.
