Annual American Composers Update
Jere Hutcheson
Premieres
Jere Hutcheson fulfilled a brief residency as guest
composer and lecturer at Carroll College in Waukesha,
WI, in April 2001. Various chamber, choral, and wind
ensembles performed a variety of his works spanning
a creative period of nearly 40 years. He also appeared
as guest lecturer at Wayne State University in November
2000.
Premieres
Composed to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the
Michigan State University orchestra program, Spartan
Spirit, a Fanfare for Brass, Percussion, and Double
Basses, received its first performance on October
20, 2001. The university orchestra also will premiere
Three Visions for Full Orchestra, on February 16,
2002. Mezzo-soprano Christine Thomas and pianist May
Phang introduced the operatic scene Mrs. Dalloway's
Party (text from Virginia Woolf's novel Mrs.
Dalloway) at Carroll College, in Waukesha, WI.
Performances
During the 2000-01 season, the saxophone and percussion
duo DuoDenum gave 16 performances of Interplay, for
alto saxophone and mallet percussion. The Carroll College
Wind Symphony under the direction of Larry Harper, performed
five movements from Hutcheson's three sets of caricature
pieces: Andy Warhol, Salvador Dali, Camille Saint-Saëns,
Dorothy Parker, and John Cage, in April 2001.
Also at Carroll College in April 2001, Phang presented
Hutcheson's Sonata for Piano (1962). The wind
band of the Larvik (Norway) School of Music, Odd Terje
Lysebo, conductor, played More Caricatures, March
2001 in Oslo.
