Annual American Composers Update
Joseph Willcox Jenkins
oseph Willcox Jenkins retired
from the music faculty of Duquesne University in July
2000. As Professor Emeritus, he will continue teaching
special courses, especially during the summer session.
Joseph Ceo, music director of the Musica Dulce of Rhode
Island, has commissioned Sonata for Viol d'Amore
and Organ, op. 200, for a premiere in spring 2002
in either Newport, RI, or Stonington, CT. Over Thanksgiving
weekend, 1999, Music Before a Joyous Wedding,
op. 195, six movements for brass sextet and organ, was
heard first at a wedding in Bethel Park, PA.
Premieres
A Children's Festival of Carols, op. 194, commissioned
by the Children's Festival Chorus, Christine Jordanoff,
director, was premiered by the chorus and members of
the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra at Christmas Festival
Concerts in Heinz Hall, December 1999. The River City
Brass, under the direction of Denis Colwell, commissioned
and introduced Fanfare 2000, op. 196, for a special
New Year's Jubilee Concert in Heinz Hall, December 31,
1999-January 1, 2000, and The Joys of Chanukah (Orah
V'Simchah), Op. 199, December 2001. Conducted by
Brady Allred, the Bach Choir of Pittsburgh and members
of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra included the first
performances of Cantate Hodie (Sing Forth this Day),
op. 197, on a series of Christmas concerts, December
2001. The Duquesne University Orchestra and chorus,
alumni choir, and soloists, under Allred, presented
Requiem, op. 198, in memory of Henry J. McAnulty,
the former chancellor of the university, an 18-movement
work sung in Latin that not only calls for organ, celeste,
and a large variety of percussion in addition to the
orchestra, but also a Scots bagpipe.
