H. Leslie Adam's Love Rejoices: Songs of H. Leslie
Adams received favorable reviews from periodicals
such as the American Record Guide, Bad Subjects,
and publications of the American Guild of Organists
Cleveland Chapter. Adams' For You There Is No Song
and Sence You Went Away were cited by Ebony
Magazine as "the greatest art songs ever written
by an African-American composer," with Sence
You Went Away cited as No. 3 and No Song
as No. 1.
Premieres
On April 7, 2001, Cantus [Henry Carl Music]
premiered with baritone Alvin Nix. Mezzo-soprano Jennifer
Seiger introduced Love Union and In the Midnight
of My Soul [both Henry Carl Music], April 24, 2001.
Pianist Leon Bates gave the first performance of Etudes
in G Minor, G Major, E-Flat Minor, A Minor, and D-Flat
Major [Henry Carl Music].
Performances
On July 5, 2001, Amazing Grace was sung by soprano
Amy Orsalat at the Chautauqua (NY) Institute. Under
the baton of Karen Kellner, the Utah Festival Opera
performed Sence You Went Away, for voice and
orchestra, July 24, 2001. In 2001, an all-Adams program
featured Maria Corley playing Etudes for Piano,
Nos. 1-14, at the University of Northern Iowa, in Waterloo,
September 9; and at Millersville University, in Lancaster,
PA, September 23.
