Annual American Composers Update
Larry Bell
On January 17, 2002, friends of SAI National Arts Associate
Larry Bell celebrated his 50th birthday with an evening
of his works at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall.

Premieres
Judy May, soprano, and Bell, piano, presented The
Immortal Beloved, February 26, 2001, at Christ and
St. Stephen's Church, New York, NY, as part of a National
Association of Composers USA program. In June 2001 in
Taipei, Taiwan, Mahler in Blue Light was played
first by saxophonist Shyen Lee. Daphna Mor introduced
Caprice, for solo alto recorder, December 10,
2001, at Trinity Church, in New York. In 2001, the New
England Children's Chorus, the Boston Modern Orchestra
Project, Gil Rose, conductor, and the New England Conservatory
(NEC) Children's Chorus, Jean Melthaus, director, gave
the first performance of Songs of Innocence and Experience,
January 20 at Jordan Hall, repeated June 2.
Performances
Guitarist John Muratore played Celestial Refrain
January 7, 2001, at the Museum of Fine Arts. Heard January
27, 2001, with 12 students from Angel Rivera's NEC Advanced
Piano Seminar, Reminiscences and Reflections,
12 preludes and fugues, is on the March 26, 2002 Boston
(MA) Conservatory Piano Masters Series, with pianist
Jonathan Bass. William Drury conducted Short Symphony
for Band, April 2001 at Eastern Washington University,
in Spokane. On January 17, 2002, at Weill Recital Hall,
New York, NY, Bell was joined by cellist Eric Barlett,
violinist Ayano Ninomiya, pianist Bass, and alto saxophonist
Kenneth Radnofsky for The Book of Moonlight, River
of Ponds, Reminiscences and Reflections, and Mahler
in Blue Light.
