Margaret Brouwer recently has completed a percussion
concerto, Aurolucent Circles, which will be
premiered by Evelyn Glennie and Gerard Schwarz with
the Seattle Symphony in the fall of 2002. Brouwer
was in residency at the MacDowell Colony during July
and August 2001. On June 6, 2001, the Cleveland Museum
of Art presented a concert of her chamber music which
the Cleveland Plain Dealer called a "radiant
meeting of the old and the new," revealing "the
gifts of a composer whose music blends superb craftsmanship
with a poetic sensibility."
Premieres
The Cleveland Museum of Art concert featured two
premieres: Under the summer tree . . . for
piano, with Leon Bates; and Light, for Pierrot
ensemble plus percussion, with soprano Sandra Simon,
harpsichordist Jeannette Sorrell, and others. Other
works scheduled to receive their first performances
in Cleveland were a composition for the Cleveland
Chamber Symphony, September 2001; and a chamber work
for Franklin Cohen, principal clarinet of the Cleveland
Orchestra, April 2002. In September 2000, SIZZLE
was introduced by the Women's Philharmonic of San
Francisco.
Performances
The Women's Philharmonic program also included her
Symphony No. 1. Diary of an Alien and Skyriding
were heard in a National Symphony Orchestra Prelude
Concert on June 2, 2001. On the Pro Arts Chamber Series
in Columbus, OH, clarinetist Robert Spring soloed
in Brouwer's Chamber Concerto, March 2001.
The composer's Horn Sonata was played by Peter
Kurau of the Eastman School of Music, February 2001.
