Annual American Composers Update
Margaret Vardall Sandresky
Margaret Vardall Sandresky continues to be active as a composer and performer after celebrating her 80th birthday in April She has received a Living Music Award for a website, www.e-universe.com/lmfhome/contest.htm. Her E-mail address is clemsand@aol.com. Currently, she is seeking performers for her Viola Sonata (premiered by and dedicated to Arnold Steinhardt) and for her flute concerto Songs of a Nomad Flute, premiered by the Moravian Philharmonic and recorded on the Vienna Modern Masters label. Excerpts from her four volumes of organ music are available through Wayne Leupold Ed., the sole selling agent for E. C. Schirmer.
Premieres
In 2001, works heard first in Winston-Salem, NC, included Mighty God, We Praise your Name, for SATB choir and organ, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, September 9; and Burdened Pilgrim, organ variations for the reed stops, at a Historical Society recital given by the composer at Centenary Methodist Church, June 25.
Performances
Pianist Clifton Matthews gave 2001 performances of Pájaro en el Espacio, based on Miro's Bird in a Space, at the Eglise St. Merri, in Paris, France, March 18, and at the Boston Conservatory of Music, April 17. The Hildegard Chamber Players played Trio II, for violin, cello, and piano, at the Curtis Institute, in Philadelphia, PA, May 6, 2001. At the Carmilite Basilica in Krakow, organist John Mitchener performed the Gloria from Sandresky's L'homme armé Organ Mass, July 12, 2001.
