Annual American Composers Update
Neil McKay
Neil McKay is completing Concertino for Two Violins,
French Horn and Orchestra, commissioned by the Hawaii
Youth Symphony to premiere in the spring of 2002.
Premieres
Symphony No.2, A Shakespeare Tryptich, was heard
first with the University of Hawaii Symphony Orchestra,
Henry Miyamura, conductor, December 3, 2001. In 2001,
Five by Five, five pieces for woodwind quintet,
premiered with the Spring Wind Quintet at Christ Church
Kailua, October 22, followed by a performance at the
Lutheran Church of Honolulu, October 29.
Performances
Voice of the Phoenix, a concerto for koto and
orchestra, had a performance with Masayo Ishigure and
the San Diego Symphony, Jung-ho Pak, conductor, at Copley
Symphony Hall, January 7, 2001. Evocations was
heard with the Hawaii Youth Symphony, under Miyamura,
at Blaisdell Concert Hall, in Honolulu, April 22, 2001.
Under the baton of Gwen Nakamura, the University of
Hawaii Concert Band played Fantasy on Sea Themes
at McKinley High School, April 30, 2001. A program at
the Hawaii Theatre included Na Mele O Kahalaopuna,
with the Hawaii Youth Symphony and the Hawaii Youth
Opera Chorus, Miyamura conducting, September 22, 2001.
