Annual American Composers Update
Paul Martin Zonn
Paul Martin Zonn, who passed away December 8, 2000,
composed over 120 concert works as well as many jazz
and popular tunes. In addition to winning many awards,
including Ford and Rockefeller grants, and Fromm and
Berkshire Center awards, he was designated a Distinguished
Alumnus of the University of Miami (FL) in 1998. His
complete catalog soon will be available on his website

in progress by his former student and colleague Terry
L. Mohn, Chairman of Music at Tampa University His works
are recorded on CRI, Ubres, Mark, and Newport Classics,
with Ultimate Nimbus, performed by the Chicago
Clarinet Trio (members of the Chicago Symphony), nominated
for a 1998 Grammy Award; and his performances as clarinetist
and conductor can be heard on Advance, Crystal, Orion,
Ubres, Grand, and CRI Recordings. In preparation for
release is Two Antiphonal Movements, with the
New Music Ensemble of the University of Louisville (KY),

Premieres
On March 12, 2001, In the Midst (1990), for
vibraphone and cello, had its first performance, with
Nashville (TN) Symphony and Vanderbilt University faculty
members Bill Wiggins, percussion, and Bradley Mansell,
cello, at Vanderbilt University, in Nashville.
Performances
2001 performances of the clarinet trio Ultimate
Nimbus (1994) occurred with the Chicago Clarinet
Trio at the Clarinetfest 2001, in New Orleans, August
18; and by the Trio Indiana (faculty clarinetists at
Indiana University, in Bloomington) at a memorial concert
for Zonn, February 1, and later at Indiana University,
November 15, and at Montezallo University, in Birmingham,
AL, November 17. The New Music Ensemble of the University
of Louisville (KY), Michael Tunnell, director and trumpeter,
played Two Antiphonal Movements (1985), for trumpet
ensemble, April 12, 2001. On November 14, 2001, The
Clarinet In My Mind (1988) was presented by the
University of Illinois Contemporary Ensemble, Zack Browning,
conductor, and clarinetist Andrea DiOrio.
