Annual American Composers Update

Samuel Adler

SAI National Arts Associate Samuel Adler, who was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters in May 2001, will be guest composer at the Society of Composers Meeting in Detroit MI; and at Wake Forest University, SUNY College at Fredonia, the University of Massachusetts, Mt. Holyoke College, Smith College, and Hampshire College in 2001-02. The American Brass Quintet will record Be Not Afraid, the Isle is Full of Noises during the coming season

Premieres

ROMP was presented by the Ying String Quartet at Wolf Trap, April 19, 2001, in Vienna, VA. The American Brass Quintet gave the first performance of Be Not Afraid, the Isle is Full of Noises, August 1, 2001, in Aspen, CO. Heard first in Chautauqua, NY was Diverstissement, for violin and marimba, with Jacques and Michael Israelievitch, August 12, 2001.

Performances

Concerto for Viola and Orchestra was on the program of the Brevard Music Center Orchestra, under David Effron, with violist Randolph Kelly, June 24, 2001. The Bowdoin Music Festival included mezzo-soprano Brenda Patterson in Primavera Amarilla, and Sarah Wolfson in Reconciliation, July 11, 2001, in Brunswick, ME. At the Colorado Springs New Music Festival, works heard were Solo Flute Sonata, with Paul Nagem; Duo Sonata, with the two-piano team Quattro Mani; and String Quartet No. 8, with the Da Vinci String Quartet. In 2001, Sonata for Viola and Piano had performances with Ronald Carbone and Frank Daykin in New York, NY, April 26; and with Kelly and Elizabeth DeMilo in Pittsburgh, PA, October 16, and Cleveland, OH, October 30. The International Double-reed Society Convention, held in Morgantown, WV, featured Domestic Tranquilities, with oboist John Mack, soprano Christine Price, and pianist DeMilo, August 7, 2001.
