The 2003 American Composers Update

Emma Lou Diemer

Emma Lou Diemer has been commissioned by the San Francisco Choral Society for a major work for chorus and orchestra to premiere in 2003.  A recording of Concerto in One Movement for Marimba, with Nathan Daughtery and the Slovak Radio Symphony, Joel Suben, conductor, is scheduled to be released by C. Alan Publications.

Premieres

Heard first at Frostburg (MD) State University in September 2001 were Quartet for Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, and Piano, with  Bryan and Lori Anton, Sandra Woodward, and Joan DeVee Dixon; and Trio for Piano, Violin, and Cello, with Dixon, Laura Kobayashi, and Ellen Grolman Schlegel.  Students of John Harbaugh premiered Quartet for Trumpets at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks National Trumpet Competition, January 2002.  An International Congress of Carillonneurs in North America program held June 2002 in Ann Arbor, MI, included Anne Rothfarb and David Christensen in the first performance of the carillon duet Toccata on "Joy to the World."  In July 2002, organist David Higgs introduced Bereden väg for Herran at the AGO National Convention in Philadelphia, PA.

Performances

Homage to Cowell, Cage, Crumb, and Czerny, for two pianos, was played by Rebecca Sorley and Sharon Parr at the University of Indianapolis (IN), January 2002. The Don Brinegar Singers presented Mass, for SATB choir, two pianos, and percussion, January 2002 in Santa Barbara, CA.  At a College Music Society program in Kansas City, MO, September 2002, soprano Judith Cline and pianist Nanette Kaplan Solomon performed the composer's songs and piano works.  Diemer presented a concert of her organ works, including Fantasie, Toccata, and Seasonal Psalms, at Grace Cathedral, in San Francisco, May 2002.  Nan Washburn will lead Michele Johns and the Plymouth (MI) Symphony Orchestra in Concerto in One Movement for Organ and Orchestra, February 2003.
