Elliott Schwartz
Elliott Schwartz held a five-day residency at Harvard
University in December
2001, including a concert of his works given by the Harvard Wind Ensemble. In March 2002, he traveled to Warsaw,
Poland, to serve
as a judge at the Serocki International
Composers Competition and returned to Europe
in May for a four-day visit as guest composer at the Royal Academy
of Music (London) and
at the London College of Music. This
summer he was guest composer at the Bowdoin
Summer Music Festival and Bar Harbor Music Festival.
Schwartz's fall 2002 activities include visiting-composer appearances
at Tufts University
and at the University of
Minnesota. During winter 2003, he will make similar appearances
to hear his music performed at Rutgers
University and at New
York University
Premieres
Peter Sheppard-Skaerved
conducted the London College of Music String Orchestra in the premiere
of Water Music, for string orchestra and recorded sounds, May
13-14, 2002. The
Portland Symphony Orchestra, under Toshiyuki Shimada, introduced Voyager,
October 8, 2002. At Bowdoin College,
in Brunswick, ME,
Riverscape, for clarinet, string
quartet, and piano, had its first performance, December
8, 2002.
Performances
Works heard as part of his residency at the London
College of Music, May 13-16, 2002, were Tapestry, Bellagio Variations, Memorial in Two Part, and Reading
Session. The College Music
Society national convention included Elan: Variations for Five Players, with the Kansas
City (MO) Conservatory New Music Ensemble, September 26, 2002, in Kansas City. On November 14, Jet Piece and Music
for Audience and Soloist were heard at the University
of Minnesota, in Minneapolis. On November
17, 2002, Prelude, Aria and Variations, and Four
Maine Haiku were on programs at Tufts
University, in Medford,
MA.
