The 2003 American Composers Update

Jack Beeson

Jack Beeson received the degree of Doctor of Music honoris causa from Columbia University in May 2002. This season, Kevin Maynor, bass-baritone, hopes to premiere Rupert Brooke Cycle, five songs based on what sometimes are called Brooke's "unpleasant poems."  Maynor also has recorded To a Sinister Potato in a CD recital, accompanied by Richard Woitach, to be released by a UK company.

Premieres

Scheduled for January 16, 2003, by Gregg Smith and his singers in New York, NY was the first performance of Summer Rounds and Canons, an a cappella work which integrates Sumer is icumen in into a larger context.New to New York, NY, is Prescription for Living (text by Sheldon Harnick), for baritone and piano, to be programmed by the American Academy in Rome, November 3 in Weill Hall, with baritone Chris Trakas.
