The 2003 American Composers Update

Jack Gallagher***

SAI National Arts Associate Jack Gallagher has completed Eight Impromptus, for unaccompanied trumpet.  Recent broadcasts of Gallagher's work include the Vienna Modern Masters CD recordings of Berceuse by the Polish Television and Radio Symphony Orchestra of Krakow, Szymon Kawalla, conductor, over WETA-FM in Washington, DC; Radio Stephansdom Klassiksender 107.3 FM, in Vienna, Austria, WPRB-FM in Princeton, NJ, and WCLV-FM in Cleveland, OH; The Persistence of Memory (In Memoriam: Brian Israel) by the Ruse Philharmonic Orchestra, Tsanko Delibozov, conductor, over WFSQ-FM in Tallahassee, FL and WCLV-FM in Cleveland; and Symphony in One Movement: Threnody by the Koszalin Philharmonic, Kawalla, conductor, also over WCLV-FM. Also heard were the US Air Force Heartland of America Band Brass Quintet CD of Toccata for Brass Quintet, over WETA-FM; and the Solaris Wind Quintet CD of Ancient Evenings and Distant Music, over WCNY-FM, Syracuse NY and WUNY-FM, Utica, NY.  Mist-Covered Mountain:  Fantasy for Symphonic Band on a Scottish Folksong, for symphonic band; The Persistence of Memory (In Memoriam: Brian Israel), for wind ensemble; Sonata for Piano; and Three Diminutive Waltzes and Pastorale, for piano, currently are in preparation with Editions Bim.

Premieres

Carl Lindquist introduced Sonata Breve, for unaccompanied trumpet, at the New Music Festival of Sandusky (OH), May 18, 2002.

Performances

Heard October 31, 2000, with the Ohio University Wind Ensemble, John Climer, conductor, in Athens, The Persistence of Memory (In Memoriam: Brian Israel) had 2001 performances by the Cincinnati (OH) College Conservatory Wind Symphony, Rodney Winther, conductor, at Corbett Auditorium, January 31, and by the Western Illinois University Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Jon Dugle, conductor, at the Western Illinois University New Music Festival, in Macomb, IL, February 26.  Eric Berken led Cleveland's Contemporary Youth Orchestra in Diversions Overture, at Cleveland State University, March 16, 2002. Proteus Rising from the Sea has been played by the Virginia Intercollegiate Band, with the composer conducting, at the Virginia/College Band Directors 2001 Symposium XXVI for New Band Music, held at the University of Richmond, February 10, 2001; by the University of Akron Symphonic Band, Robert Jorgensen, conductor, at the Society of Composers, Inc. 2002 Annual National Conference, the University of Akron and again at the University of Akron, April 21, 2002.  In 2001, Roger Zahab, violin, and Robert Frankenberry, piano, presented Exotic Dances at The College of Wooster, June 25, and at a Cleveland Composers Guild chamber concert, in Christ Episcopal Church, Shaker Heights, OH, September 30.  Ancient Evenings and Distant Music was performed by the Cincinnati Conservatory student woodwind quintet, November 4, 2000, and by the Camerata Woodwind Quintet, at Western Illinois University, in Macomb, December 2, 2001.
