The 2003 American Composers Update

Judith Lang Zaimont****

Judith Lang Zaimont was elected the 2003-2005 national board member in composition for The College Music Society.  The University of Minnesota, in Minneapolis, has named her a 2003-2005 Scholar of the College of Liberal Arts. In 2002, she was featured composer for a national conference on women composers, held in Mississippi (October), and for the National Federation of Music Clubs.  A feature interview with her is in the winter 2003 Clavier; and "Jazz Waltz" from Suite Impressions appears as a scoring assignment for the 3rd edition of Adler's The Study of Orchestration teaching package. Works commissioned for 2003 premieres include one for a piano suite from the California Music Teachers Association, with 20 performances planned as well as publication by Vivace Press (June); and one for an extended work for piano from the International San Antonio (TX) Competition, to be a required work for the competition (October).  Supported by grants from the Aaron Copland Fund (AMC) and the Ditson Fund (Columbia University), the Albany Records release of various piano works, with Joanne Polk, now is planned for a 2003 release. Premieres

In October 2002, Vergie Rainey (texts by Eudora Welty), a scena for soprano, mezzo-soprano, and piano, commissioned by Millsaps College, in Jackson, MS, was introduced at a national conference on women composers.  The Bergen Wind Quintet, which premiered Zaimont's Wind Quintet No. 2 - "Homeland", commissioned by the Minnesota Commissioning Club, at Ted Mann Hall, in Minneapolis, played it again February 2003 in Bergen, Norway.  The College Band Directors National Association National Convention, March 2003, will feature the first performance of Symphony for Wind Orchestra (I:  Growler  II:  Dreamz  III: Tattoo), commissioned to honor the 100th anniversary of the University of Minnesota School of Music, with the University of Minnesota Wind Ensemble, Craig Kirchhoff, director.
