Martin Boykan

Martin Boykan's volume of critical essays on music, entitled Silence and Slow Time, was scheduled for publication by the Scarecrow Press in late 2002.  In celebration of his 70th birthday, concerts were presented by the Empyrean Ensemble, in Berkeley and Davis, CA, and by Dinosaur Annex, in Boston and Waltham, MA; and a series of tributes was published in Perspective of New Music, Vol. 38, No. 2.


Premieres

Songlines, for flute, clarinet, violin, and cello, and Romanza, for flute and piano, were heard first with the Empyrean Ensemble, April 27-28, 2002, in Berkeley and Davis, CA.  The New York Consort of Viols introduced Motet May 16, in New York.  Premiered by Boston's Dinosaur Annex November 17 and 18, 2001, were Flume, for clarinet and piano, and A Packet for Susan, for mezzo-soprano and piano.


Performances

In 2002, A Packet for Susan, five songs for soprano and piano, was heard with Pamela Dellal and Donald Berman (Dynosaur Annex), February 3, at Warebrook, July 13, and in Waltham, March 2.  Also performed by Dynosaur Annex were City of Gold, Eclogue, Sonata for Violin and Piano.  A program at the University of Utah included Piano Fantasy, April 2001 in Salt Lake City.  An ISCM League concert, April 22, 2002, in New York, NY, featured Boykan's Piano Trio No. 2.  On February 2, 2002, Schadeberg and Oldfather presented Psalm 98 in Waltham.

Flume:  Fantasy for Clarinet and Piano; Sonata for Violin and Piano; A Packet for Susan; String Quartet No. 1; all on a CRI reissue from the 1975 vinyl recording, October 2002.
