Michael G. Cunningham
Michael G. Cunningham's new works include Savings
Can Be Fun and The Gettysburg Address, for unison male
choir; May the Angels Lead You, a funeral dirge for SATB choir
and piano; Ten Motets, for a cappella SATB choir; Confections,
for SATB brass choir; and Modal Explorations, short inventions
for piano. His textbooks A Musician's Primer and
Divisional Counterpoint are available from 1st Books Library.
Premieres
On April 21, 2002, Piano Trio No. 9,
for piano, violin, and clarinet, was presented by University
of Wisconsin - Oshkosh
faculty members over Wisconsin Public Radio; and on May 20, two of
the same group helped to introduce Piano Trio No. 8, for piano,
oboe, and clarinet, at the Saint Petersburg
(Russia)
State Conservatory. Works premiered
at the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire (UW-EC) campus between
November 2001 and May 2002 were Three Short Songs and Dreams,
with soprano Elizabeth Hellman and Cunningham at the piano; The Snow Storm, with
baritone Jeffrey Kensmoe and Cunningham
at the piano; a concert reading of the mini-opera Elizabeth and
DeVere, with lead singers Kathryn Proctor-Duax
and Daniel Newman and Cunningham at the piano; Christmas is Coming,
for SATB choir, performed by an ad hoc group; Duologue,
for saxophone and marimba, with Jared Ziegler and Tim Doleysh;
Fantasy on a Gregorian Hymn, with pianist Donald Patterson;
Fox Trot, for violin, tenor saxophone, and piano, with Nick
Seeger, Jeffrey Reitz, and Barbara Young;
Recollections (three pieces), with Cunningham conducting the
UW-EC Jazz Ensemble I; Overture to the Cave of Silver Willows,
with Mark Heidel leading the UW-EC Wind
Symphony; and Grusha Suite, with Rodney Hudson directing the UW-EC Symphony
Band.
Performances
Also performed on campus and in the Eau Claire metropolitan
area between December 2001 and April 2002 were Forest Ballads,
for guitar, with Vincent Rose; Incantation (new saxophone version),
with Jared Ziegler and pianist Zach Halmstad;
Parisian Sonata, with bassoonist Toby Yatso
and pianist Beverly Soll; Hi Jinks, for tuba and piano, with Jerry and
Barbara Young; and Three Ditties, for oboe and piano, with
University of Wisconsin - Stout faculty Stephanie Graber and Mark
Pruett.
