Neil McKay's Symphony No.2 (A Shakespeare Triptych) won the Loudoun Symphony's 2002 competition for American composers.


Premieres

In Honolulu's Blaisdell Concert Hall, E Kui Lima! ("Join Hands"), for two violins, French horn, and orchestra, received its first performance from Asa Nagakura of Japan, Ryan Dote of Honolulu, Erica Chenoweth of Alaska, and the Hawaii Youth Symphony, Henry Miyamura, conductor, April 14, 2002.


Performances

Symphony No.2 (A Shakespeare Triptych) was performed by the Loudoun Symphony, Mark Allen McCoy, music director and conductor, in Leesburg, VA, March 23-24, 2002.  As part of the 36th National Conference of the Society of Composers, April 20, 2002, at the University of Akron, Eric Benjamin led the Akron (OH) Youth Symphony in . . . Such sweet sorrow.  Works heard in Honolulu in 2002 included There Once Was . . ., An Introduction and Five Limericks, with soprano Megan Mount and pianist Beebe Freitas, at Orvis Auditorium, May 2; La'ie'ikawai, Princess of the Rainbow, an opera for youth, with the Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus, Nola Nahulu, director, at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, May 11; and Fantasy on Sea Themes with the Honolulu Symphonic Wind Ensemble, under Miyamura, at Pearl City Cultural Center, July 24.  A performance of Voice of the Phoenix, a concerto for koto and orchestra, took place with Masayo Ishigure and the New Haven Symphony, Jung-Ho Pak, conductor, at Quinnipac University, in Camden, CT, June 22, 2002.
