The 2004 American Composers Update

as published in PAN PIPES, Volume 96, Number 2

Arthur Berger

Among the continuing events in honor of Berger's 90th birthday, a concert titled "Arthur Berger, His Students & Friends," was given at Staller Center for the Arts, SUNY-Stony Brook (NY) on April 8, 2003. The works performed included Berger's Birthday Cards and Three Bagatelles for piano, Three Pieces for Two Pianos, and Trio for Guitar, Violin, and Piano. In addition, Geoffrey Burleson performed Berger's piano works, which Burleson had recorded on the Centaur label in 2002, at Queens College and Princeton University. The New York Public Library at Lincoln Center hosted a celebration for the publication of Berger's book, Reflections of an American Composer, published in 2002 by University of California Press. This book and Berger's Complete Works for Solo Piano CD were the subjects of a critical article and review by Rodney Lister in Tempo Magazine.
